Tour the ruins of Kofu Castle and Maizuru Castle Park! A sightseeing spot where you can enjoy history and spectacular views

Kofu Castle Ruins (Maizuru Castle Park) — What Is It?

The Kofu Castle ruins (Kofu-jō ato) are a historic castle site located in Kofu City, Yamanashi Prefecture, now maintained as Maizuru Castle Park.

After the fall of the Takeda clan, construction proceeded under orders from Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and later the castle became an important base for Tokugawa rule over Kai Province.

Today, well-preserved remains—especially the stone walls—remain, and buildings such as the Inari Yagura, Tetsu Gate, and Yamate Gate have been reconstructed.

It was designated a National Historic Site in 2019 and was also selected as one of Japan’s Top 100 Castles (No. 25).

Maizuru Castle Park is loved by residents and visitors alike as a nature-rich park that preserves the castle ruins.

In spring the cherry blossoms bloom in profusion, making it a popular spot for hanami (flower viewing).

From the park you can also overlook Kofu city and, on clear days, see Mount Fuji in the distance—making it a special place where history and nature blend.

Highlights of Kofu Castle Ruins (Maizuru Castle Park)

1. The Beauty of the Stone Walls

The stone walls of Kofu Castle are valuable remains that convey the high level of castle-building techniques of the time.

Their solid masonry served as key defensive elements and evoke the atmosphere of the Sengoku (Warring States) period.

The stonework at the site of the Inari Yagura in particular is impressive and often stops visitors in their tracks.

2. Inari Yagura Gate

The Inari Yagura Gate, symbolic of Kofu Castle, is a reconstructed historic structure.

Its dignified presence evokes the former grandeur of the castle and it’s a popular photo spot.

3. Spectacular Views from the Observation Deck

There is an observation deck inside Maizuru Castle Park where you can take in panoramic views of Kofu city.

On clear days you can see Mount Fuji and the Southern Alps in the distance; the scenery at sunset is especially breathtaking.
