What Is Odawara Castle? History and Top Highlights
Odawara Castle is a famous historic castle designated as a National Historic Site, located in Odawara City, Kanagawa Prefecture. Its origins trace back to a fortress built by the Ōmori clan in the mid-15th century.
Around 1500, the Sengoku warlord Hōjō Sōun (Ise Sōzui) seized the castle, and it was later expanded and developed as the base of the Later Hōjō clan’s rule over the Kantō region for about 100 years across five generations.
During Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s Siege of Odawara (1590), a massive outer defensive perimeter (sōgamae) with a total length of about 9 km was built, making it one of the largest castle fortifications in Japan.
In the Edo period, the Ōkubo and Inaba clans served as lords of the castle, and it functioned until the end of the shogunate as a key defensive stronghold of the Kantō region near the Hakone checkpoint on the Tōkaidō route.
The current main keep was reconstructed in 1960 (Shōwa 35), and its interior is open to the public as a museum.
Together with the castle ruins park, where visitors can enjoy seasonal flowers throughout the year, it is a highly popular destination for history lovers and tourists.
